The Approach
Lifted, Reshaped, and Beautifully You
A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, restores the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. Your surgeon gently removes excess skin, reshapes the breast tissue, and raises the nipple and areola to a natural, balanced height. The result is a firmer, more uplifted shape, with your breast size staying much the same.
For many women, that is exactly the transformation they hope for. For others, especially after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss, the upper breast may also have lost fullness. In that case, a breast lift with implants can restore both shape and volume in one procedure. Because Artisan performs breast lifts, breast augmentation, and the combination, your surgeon will guide you toward the approach that suits your body and your goals best.
Candidacy
Is a Breast Lift Right for You?
A breast lift is a meaningful decision, involving surgery under general anesthesia, carefully placed scars, and a recovery that rewards patience. It is also one of the most rewarding procedures we perform, often helping women feel confident and at home in their bodies again.
You may be an ideal candidate if:
- Your breasts have descended or your nipples sit lower, often after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or time [link: breast lift after pregnancy blog]
- You are happy with your breast size and would love a more lifted position
- Your nipples point downward, your areolae have stretched, or you would like to improve asymmetry
- You have finished having children, or feel confident you have, and your weight is stable
- You do not smoke, or are ready to stop, since healthy blood flow is essential for safe healing
- You are comfortable with scars in exchange for a beautifully lifted shape
Scars
Your Incisions Thoughtfully Placed
The three patterns
The Three Incision Patterns
Your incision pattern is guided by how much skin needs to be lifted and reshaped.
- Donut (periareolar): a circle around the areola, ideal for a mild lift with minimal scarring.
- Lollipop (vertical): a circle around the areola with a vertical line to the breast crease, our most common pattern for moderate lifting.
- Anchor (inverted-T): adds a line along the breast crease for significant lift and reshaping, offering the most correction.
How Your Scars Heal
Scars soften and fade beautifully over the first year, and most are easily concealed by a bra or swimsuit top. Healing varies with your skin, genetics, aftercare, and whether you smoke. During your consultation, your surgeon will share which pattern suits your anatomy and what you can expect as your scars mature.
The Procedure
How Breast Lift Surgery Works
Your breast lift takes two to three hours under general anesthesia at our Northside surgical location, and you return home the same day with a trusted companion to stay with you overnight.
During surgery, your surgeon removes excess skin, reshapes and lifts the breast tissue, and repositions the nipple and areola to a natural, youthful height. Stretched areolae can be resized for a more balanced look, and incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.
Your surgeon removes the excess skin, reshapes the breast tissue underneath, and repositions the nipple and areola to their correct height. The areola can also be resized if it has stretched, which it often has. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.
A lift is not simply skin removal with a tighter envelope.
Choosing
Do You Need a Lift, an Augmentation, or Both?
Breast Lift
Restores position
- Lifts and reshapes tissue, repositions the nipple, and removes excess skin. Size stays about the same.
- Ideal when you have the volume you love and want it lifted.
- Often recommended when the nipple sits below the breast crease or points downward.
- Restores a youthful position and shape.
Breast Augmentation
Adds volume
- Adds size and upper fullness with an implant.
- Ideal when your position is lovely and you would like more fullness.
- Often recommended when the nipple sits at or above the breast crease.
- Enhances volume and curve.
If your breasts have both lowered and lost fullness, which is common after pregnancy or weight loss, a breast lift with implants restores both in a single procedure. If larger breasts are causing discomfort, a breast reduction lifts and reduces for lasting relief.
Longevity
How Long Does a Breast Lift Last?
A breast lift offers beautiful, long-lasting results, and your breasts will continue to age naturally from their new, lifted position. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results for years. Because pregnancy can change the shape of the breasts, many women choose to have their lift once their family is complete, and your surgeon will help you decide on the best timing.
Recovery
Your Breast Lift Recovery Timeline
Here is what to expect as you heal, with follow-up visits marked so you can plan with ease.
Day of surgery
You wake in a supportive surgical bra and return home the same day with someone to care for you overnight.
First week
Rest on your back with your head elevated to reduce swelling, keep your arms below shoulder height, and wear your surgical bra at all times except to shower.
1 week
Most patients return to desk work and light activities. Your first follow-up visit takes place.
Weeks 1 to 3
Avoid lifting anything over 5 pounds, as well as pushing or pulling. Your three-week follow-up takes place.
6 weeks
Continue wearing a supportive bra through this point. Once cleared at your final follow-up, you can return to exercise and wear any bra you like, including underwire.
3 to 6 months
Swelling resolves and your breasts settle into their final, lifted shape.
Up to a year
Your scars continue to soften, flatten, and fade.

FAQ
Will a breast lift make me bigger?
A breast lift raises and reshapes your breasts while keeping your size about the same. If you would also like more fullness, a breast lift with implants can restore both lift and volume.
Do I need a lift, or just an implant?
A simple guide is your nipple position. If it sits at or above the crease beneath your breast, implants alone may give you the look you want. If it sits below the crease, a lift is usually recommended. Your consultation will confirm the best approach.
Where will my breast lift scars be?
Depending on how much lift you need, scars may circle the areola, extend vertically to the breast crease, or continue along the crease. They fade over the first year and are typically hidden by a bra or swimsuit.
Will I lose nipple sensation?
Changes in sensation can occur after a breast lift. They are often temporary, though in some cases they can be permanent. Your surgeon will discuss what to expect based on your anatomy and technique.
What are the risks?
Risks include changes in nipple sensation, reduced blood supply to the nipple, scarring, asymmetry, wound healing concerns, changes to breastfeeding ability, blood clots, and the possibility of revision, along with general surgical risks. Your surgeon will review each of these with you.
How much does a breast lift cost?
Your cost depends on your incision pattern, whether implants are included, anesthesia, and facility fees. You will receive personalized pricing after your consultation, and financing is available.
How long is recovery?
Most women return to desk work in about one week, avoid lifting over 5 pounds for three weeks, and resume exercise at six weeks once cleared by their surgeon.
How long does a lift last?
Years, and your breasts keep aging from the new position. Weight change and pregnancy will undo it faster than anything else. A lift resets the clock rather than stopping it.
Should I wait until I am done having children?
Generally, yes. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can substantially undo a lift. If you are planning a pregnancy or you are unsure, we will usually recommend waiting rather than operating twice.
Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?
Many women can, depending on their anatomy and the technique used. If breastfeeding matters to you, let us know during your consultation so we can plan accordingly.
Will I stay overnight?
No. Your breast lift is an outpatient procedure at our Northside location, and you will go home the same day with someone to stay with you overnight.
Can a lift correct asymmetry?
Yes, and it is one of the things it does well. Uneven breasts and uneven nipple position can both be addressed.
Can a breast lift be revised?
Yes. If your breasts have changed over time or after a previous procedure, a revision can restore lift and shape.
Can I get a breast lift if I have large breasts?
Yes. Women with fuller breasts often benefit from a lift, and if your size causes discomfort, a breast reduction may be the better choice. Your surgeon will help you decide.
