In August 2001, after a younger sister was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, I made an appointment with Dr. Brenda Simpson at Breast Care Specialists. I continued going to Dr. Simpson for annual mammograms until a second sister was diagnosed. At this time, Dr. Simpson wanted me to be checked every six months. I had mammograms in February and ultrasounds in August. At my August 2006 appointment, she wanted me to come back in September for a breast MRI.
About 2 weeks later, she called me and said that a small lump was detected on the MRI. I went to her office on October 31 for a biopsy on my left breast. Three days later, she called to tell me that it was Ductal Carcinoma in Situ measuring less than 1 cm. When I went for my consultation, Dr. Simpson said I could have a lumpectomy and radiation. But with my family history, I decided on a Bilateral Mastectomy and TRAM reconstruction. She immediately agreed and referred me to Dr. Alexander for reconstructive surgery. Since I opted for the bilateral mastectomy, I did not have to do radiation or chemotherapy.
On December 14, 2006, I underwent the surgeries at Northside Hospital. I had a very successful surgery and wonderful hospital care and returned home five days later. My husband was a great nurse and tells everyone that his nursing care was the reason I had such an easy recuperation.
On April 10, 2007, I had the revision part of my reconstruction surgery. Dr. Alexander did this surgery at the Meridian Mark building, and again I received great care.
At the present time, everything appears to be fine. I feel great, and I am very pleased with the results of my TRAM reconstruction
