Breast Asymmetry Correction in Atlanta
Do you have uneven breasts? Most women do. Breast asymmetry is actually more common that perfect symmetry—most women have one breast that is larger than the other (usually the left), or a difference in shape between the two breasts. While normal, if breast asymmetry is making it hard for you to find bras that fit, or your self-confidence is suffering, then it is worth looking into your options to correct it.
At Artisan Plastic Surgeons, our female plastic surgeons are among the most experienced breast surgeons in Atlanta. Both Dr. Alexander and Dr. Wang-Ashraf have performed breast reconstruction and cosmetic breast surgery as a large part of their practice since 2000. Their depth of experience provides them the skill, techniques and artistic eye necessary to dramatically improve breast symmetry, even in challenging cases. No matter how severe your breast asymmetry may be, they can help you.
What causes breast asymmetry?
Since no two breasts are exactly the same, all women have some degree of asymmetry between their breasts. The more significant asymmetries can occur as a result of a congenital anomaly, an injury (such as a burn), or due to changes after breastfeeding. Asymmetry can also occur if there is complication with breast augmentation, such as implant malposition or capsular contracture.
Regardless of cause, breast asymmetry can usually be significantly improved with surgery, customized to a patient’s unique needs.
How can breast asymmetry be corrected?
Our Atlanta plastic surgeons tailor breast asymmetry correction to each patient, based on their anatomy, the degree and nature of breast asymmetry, and their personal goals (i.e., would you like larger or smaller breasts after the procedure?).
There are few general approaches we can take:
Placing a breast implant in one or both breasts
If you have a significant size discrepancy, and would like both breasts to match the larger breast, we can place an implant in the smaller side. If you would like larger breasts overall, we can place different-sized implants in each breast to achieve your goals.
Single-breast reduction
If you would like your breasts to match the smaller side, we can remove excess skin and breast tissue from the larger breast, and reshape one or both breasts to achieve an aesthetically pleasing, more symmetrical result.
Traditional breast reduction
If you would like smaller breasts overall, we can perform a full breast reduction, removing more tissue from the larger side, and less from the smaller side to achieve close symmetry.
Breast lift with implants
This can be a good option if you have both shape and size asymmetry. With a breast lift, we can remove excess skin and reshape the breast, and then place implants to achieve your desired size.
There are many different options for improving the symmetry of your breasts. Your Artisan Plastic Surgeon will listen closely to your goals and discuss the surgical options that will best achieve those goals, based on your anatomy.

Breast asymmetry correction recovery
Your recovery experience will depend on the procedures that your plastic surgeon performs to correct breast asymmetry. In general, recovery will be quicker after a straightforward breast augmentation procedure than after an extensive breast reduction procedure. In general, though, patients are able to return to office work and most daily routine activity within 1 to 2 weeks. For more recovery information, you may wish to visit our breast augmentation and/or breast reduction pages.
